LDS Charities Assists Facility Remodel for Society of the Blind

Comforting and Supporting Those Who Are Blind

Our eyesight is precious. And often, we take it for granted. But when we are aware of others around us who do not enjoy this priceless gift, we reflect and are grateful.

"Jesus Christ restored sight unto many." Luke 7:21

As His disciples, we would strive to follow His example. There are instances where sight has been restored medically or through Priesthood blessings. There are additional acts of service we can perform for those afflicted with visual loss.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes the large numbers of individuals, families and friends afflicted by loss of sight. Those individuals are limited in their ability to pursue usual activities. And so the Church has reached out to lift and aid those who currently suffer and those who are at risk for vision loss.

In Seremban, North Sembilan, The Society of the Blind in Malaysia, provides training and support for those who suffer. Meetings, limited education and activities have been offered to participants for years.

With the hope of improving their provision of services to patrons, they acquired a larger facility several months ago. But they were disheartened when they discovered that the air conditioning was inadequate for their second story site. The flooring was also in bad repair.

LDS Charities (LDSC) visited their facility at that time and made a proposal to make it functional. That required the installation of three new air conditioning units and replacement of 87 square meters (936 sq ft) of flooring with hardwood laminate.

The remodel was recently completed and LDSC was invited back to experience the facility and receive the appreciation of the leadership and members who remark that it is “pleasant and comfortable.”

At an open house held December 31, 2017 at the remodeled facility in Seremban, Society of the Blind Chairman, Abdul Hasmid Abdul Rahman, presented Elder Rex Coleman, representing LDSC, a plaque of recognition and expressed heartfelt appreciation for the facility improvements.

"This gift will allow the Society of the Blind in Malaysia to achieve the highest level of success for our organization," Hasmid stated.
