Donation of Sacred Books to Interfaith Library

News Release

On Wednesday, July 11, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints donated eight religious publications to The Pure Life Society (PLS).

For almost 70 years, “PLS has performed relief work among the poor, orphans and displaced children of Malaysia. It has promoted multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious understanding through lectures, conferences, forums, and dramas,” said Mother Mangalam, Life President of PLS.

Recently, Pure Life held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new library. Mother Mangalam requested a collection of LDS Sacred books to be assigned a special place within the library.

President Tai Tolman, of the KL District of the Church, was consulted regarding which books should be included to represent and inform our theology. The works include the following sacred books of scripture: The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, which are revelation as received by prophets. The Church also accepts the Holy Bible as scripture, but recognizes there are multiple acceptable translations. Other selections such as Jesus the Christ by James E. Talmage, Our Search for Happiness by M. Russell Ballard, and A Marvelous Work and A Wonder by LeGrand Richards, are explanatory works of the scriptures and were written by apostles.  True to the Faith is an encyclopedic work of Gospel terms and Our Heritage is a brief history of the Church. Both are simplified for the use of children.

While the list is not exhaustive, it provides more than a basic understanding of the Church and its teachings and the works are approachable by those who are just beginning their education. Each copy contains a bookplate that would enable an inquisitive student to access individuals who could provide further explanation.

Again, quoting Mother Mangalam, “There are probably more books on religion than any other category. It lies in us to choose and use the information provided to make our lives better.”
