The humanitarian arm of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is LDS Charities. Through LDS Charities, worldwide humanitarian donations are placed where needs are identified. LDS Charities funding supports only humanitarian work—100 percent of the funds go toward project expenses. Today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the closing ceremony for one such project took place.

The Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Tamil) Thamboosamy Pilai school provides education for a Tamil student population of around 300 uniformed, polite children. In the tropical heat of Kuala Lumpur, there is no air conditioning for the students who attend there, and there was only one safe drinking water source for students and staff alike. The water engineer is a Rotarian, and mentioned the limited access to safe drinking water on campus to a fellow Rotarian, Kirenjit Kaur. She is the immediate past District Governor of the 77 Rotary Clubs in the Kuala Lumpur area. Kirenjit connected her Rotary Club, the Titiwangsa Chapter, to the local LDS Humanitarian Senior Couple, Elder and Sister Kane, to determine what could be done. Rotary found the school, the need, the supplier, and also organized the installation of the filter. LDS Charities provided the water filter and its first year of maintenance. As the pure water fountain was installed, it was determined that there was insufficient water pressure. The Rotary Club stepped forward to provide a new pump to correct the problem.
From this need for fresh water on campus, other needs at the school became known. With the movement in education focusing more on technology than textbooks, the school needed help to update. LDS Charities had a desire to participate on a larger scale. LDS Charities not only provided a new water fountain and filtering system, but it also donated five digital projectors and five screens to the school. This up to date equipment will facilitate broader scale teaching, and will allow the students greater opportunities, including learning while having fun!
In remarks at the Closing Ceremony, Kirenjit pointed out that when Rotary partners with other NGOs, wonderful things happen, as is evidenced by today’s event. The students are the beneficiaries of such benevolence and they need to use these donations to better themselves. She stated that the children in this school deserve this chance.
